Indian expats buy gold in UAE ahead of summer travel home
As the summer travel season peaks and many Indian expatriates in the UAE prepare to return home, gold retailers in Dubai and Sharjah are reporting a surge in demand for jewelry. This trend is driven by the significant price gap between gold in the UAE and India.
Market experts indicate that purchasing gold in the UAE can be up to 13% cheaper than in India. While the exact difference depends on the specific product and retailer, jewelry prices in the UAE are typically 8% to 10% lower than those in India.
Industry insiders attribute this price disparity to the absence of gold import duties in the UAE and lower making charges. In contrast, high taxes and customs duties in India significantly inflate the final retail price of gold.
Retailers note that customers often prefer simple designs, plain chains, and lightweight pieces. These items are easier to exchange or resell in India, retaining more of their value during conversion.
While savings on gold bars and coins can be even higher, transporting them to India may be subject to strict customs regulations and taxes. Under current Indian customs rules, eligible passengers who have resided outside India for over a year can bring in up to 40 grams of gold jewelry for women and 20 grams for men duty-free.
To capitalize on the travel season, several jewelry stores have launched "Back Home" promotions, offering incentives such as reduced making charges or discounts on selected collections.
Gold holds profound financial and symbolic importance in Indian culture, featuring prominently in weddings, family gatherings, and as gifts. Consequently, purchasing gold before traveling has become an essential part of the summer itinerary for many Indian expatriates living in the UAE.
