The UAE is rapidly increasing investment in major tourism and leisure projects to boost the sector’s contribution to economic growth and strengthen the country’s competitiveness as a leading global tourism destination.

The UAE’s tourism development drive in 2026 has included the launch of new destinations, luxury facilities and diverse leisure experiences across several emirates. These developments reflect the country’s continued efforts to diversify its tourism industry and combine investment with culture, sustainability and entertainment.

Abu Dhabi: Expanding Investment on Yas Island

In Abu Dhabi, Yas Island was selected in May as the site of Sphere Abu Dhabi. Construction costs are estimated at $1.7 billion, and once completed, it will be the first Sphere venue outside the United States.

The venue, to be built between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, will accommodate up to 20,000 people and host immersive and interactive experiences, concerts, sporting events, conferences and other major events.

It will also showcase Emirati culture and support local and Arab talent.

Miral has also announced plans to invest more than AED12 billion on Yas Island over the next five years. The investment will fund new projects and the expansion of existing attractions.

The programme is aligned with the Abu Dhabi Tourism Strategy 2030 and will include further development of Yas Island’s theme parks and attractions, as well as new immersive rides and leisure experiences.

Dubai: New Leisure Destinations

In February, Dubai approved the Al Layan Oasis project as a new environmental and leisure destination. Covering one million square metres, the development will include a lake spanning more than 250,000 square metres.

The destination will feature walking and cycling tracks, family areas and event spaces, an open-air cinema, camping facilities for 100 caravans, retail outlets and leisure services within a sustainable natural setting.

Dubai has also approved a AED500 million master plan to redevelop Umm Suqeim Beach, transforming it into an integrated, round-the-clock tourism and leisure destination inspired by Emirati identity.

The project will increase Umm Suqeim Beach’s capacity to around six million visitors annually. It will also include upgraded facilities, parking areas, walking and cycling tracks, a 38-metre observation tower and a two-kilometre coastal barrier.

Smart technologies and artificial intelligence will also be used to manage the destination’s facilities.

Sharjah: Expanding Khorfakkan’s Attractions

In Sharjah, the foundation stone for Abu Al Keizan Marine Village was laid in Khorfakkan this year. The seven-million-square-foot development is inspired by coastal villages and incorporates elements of Islamic architecture and local identity.

The project will feature a small natural harbour nestled among the rocks, a boulevard, a beach, green spaces, a hotel, commercial and office units, homes and a mosque.

The development includes 201 plots designated for 285 buildings and has been designed to preserve the surrounding natural environment and marine life.

Khorfakkan also saw the opening this year of the AED700 million Khorfakkan Resort, adding a major new residential and tourism destination to the coastal city.

The development features 573 residential units, 16 retail units, a fitness club, 100,000 square feet of elevated green space, outdoor swimming pools, sports facilities, children’s recreational areas, a private beach and integrated hotel services.

Ras Al Khaimah: Al Rams Beach and Boulevard Development

Development work has also begun on Al Rams Beach and Al Rams Boulevard in Ras Al Khaimah. The project aims to create an integrated destination that enhances quality of life, supports sustainable development and strengthens national identity.

Al Rams Beach stretches for 2,000 metres and will feature dedicated walking, cycling and running tracks, public amenities, parking, green spaces, playgrounds and plazas for community events.
