From Monday, September 14, 2026, the speed limit on a section of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Road in Abu Dhabi will be reduced.

Abu Dhabi Mobility said the speed limit on the E311 section will be lowered in both directions from 120km/h to 100km/h. Motorists must observe the new signs and speed restrictions along this stretch.

The 20km/h reduction is part of the latest traffic changes in Abu Dhabi.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Road is a major route connecting Abu Dhabi with the northern emirates. In Dubai, the E311 continues as Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.

Authorities said the speed limit in both directions on this section will be 100km/h from September 14, and drivers must slow down as soon as they enter the new speed zone.

Abu Dhabi Mobility urged motorists to comply with the announced limits and traffic signs along the route. Fines will be issued based on the speed limit displayed on the signs.

Speed regulations on the E311 have previously been amended. In April 2025, the minimum speed limit of 120km/h, which applied to the two left-hand lanes on some sections of the road, was removed. Authorities said scrapping the minimum limit would help improve the flow of heavy vehicles and enhance road safety.

In Abu Dhabi, speeding fines are determined by how far a driver exceeds the posted limit. Penalties start at about AED300 for less serious offences and can reach AED3,000 for exceeding the limit by more than 80km/h. Serious violations may also result in 23 black points and vehicle impoundment for 60 days.

Abu Dhabi Police will continue offering discounts in 2026 for the early payment of certain traffic fines. Drivers who pay an eligible fine within 60 days can receive a 35 per cent discount. A 25 per cent discount is available for payments made after 60 days and within one year. Serious offences are excluded from these discounts.

Some motorists can also pay fines in interest-free instalments through participating banks.

Alongside the change to the E311 speed limit, another temporary restriction will be introduced on Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Road. The two left-hand lanes of the E11 towards Al Shahama will close at midnight on Sunday, September 13, and reopen at 5am on Monday, September 14.

Traffic capacity towards Al Shahama will be reduced during the closure, and motorists have been advised to take this into account when planning their journeys.

Abu Dhabi authorities also reduced speed limits on several major roads in 2025. The limit on Sweihan Road, E20, was lowered from 120km/h to 100km/h, while the limit on a section of the E11 was reduced from 160km/h to 140km/h.

When the new change takes effect on Monday, another of Abu Dhabi’s major roads will become subject to a lower speed limit.
