Young Roger Shi’s letter, written with no expectation of a response and addressed simply to "Sheikh Mohammed," was sent as a heartfelt expression of thanks following a family discussion about life, safety, and gratitude in the UAE.

What followed was entirely unexpected. The letter reached the office of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, prompting a response from the Dubai Ruler’s protocol team and an invitation for a personal meeting. This turn of events transformed a simple gesture into an unforgettable experience for the young Chinese expatriate.

A heartfelt letter from a family

Hua Shi, Roger’s father, said: "We were talking at home about how our safe and normal life is the result of the efforts and sacrifices of those who protect us. Roger felt he should write a big thank-you letter."

This conversation became the foundation of Roger’s handwritten note. In his letter, the young boy expressed his gratitude for the sense of stability and security he experiences in Dubai. He also mentioned moments of fleeting fear during unexpected alerts, writing how his parents' reassurance and the quick return to normalcy deepened his appreciation for the country he calls home. The letter carried a child’s perspective on safety, trust, and the rhythm of daily life in the UAE.

How Roger met Sheikh Mohammed

The note had been sent via local mail. However, about a month later, the family received an unexpected call from the protocol office. Roger was preparing to record a piano performance when they were asked to go to Atlantis, The Palm at around 1 PM to meet a government official.

Upon arrival, the family was asked to wait, having no idea what was in store for them. They said:
