The UAE Government has amended the Crimes and Penalties Law to decriminalise attempted suicide. Under the changes, people who attempt to take their own lives will no longer face criminal penalties.

The amendments, announced on Thursday, October 8, are intended to shift the legal approach from prosecution to prevention, treatment and compassionate support for people who have attempted suicide.

The decision aims to reduce fear of legal consequences and encourage people experiencing mental health crises to seek timely professional help and support.

UAE authorities believe the approach will facilitate early intervention, ensure access to necessary treatment and support services, and strengthen suicide prevention programmes.

The amendments also aim to improve the recording, monitoring and collection of data on such cases, which could help develop more effective prevention and treatment programmes.

Officials said the legal change forms part of the UAE’s continuing policy of modernising its laws and developing a judicial system that keeps pace with social changes.

While strengthening the rule of law and expanding preventive, support and care measures, the approach seeks to balance legal deterrence, human dignity and public safety.
