The "Dirty Drink" is the latest trend in UAE cafes that everyone wants to try; will this new beverage replace the iced latte?
"Dirty" drinks have emerged as one of the latest trends in UAE cafes. These layered beverages feature hot espresso poured over cold milk or matcha, creating a striking contrast in temperature, texture, and flavor.
Despite the name, these drinks have no connection to being unclean. The "dirty" label refers to the marbled appearance and the gradual blending of coffee into the milk—a process that offers a unique taste while providing a visually appealing aesthetic for social media.
Between Two Palms, a home-grown cafe in Abu Dhabi launched in February 2026 by Sara Al Zaabi and Fatima Al Muhairi, notes that the "Dirty Espresso" began as a simple menu option but quickly became the primary draw for customers. According to the founders, the experience starts with a gentle sweetness in the first sip, followed by the bold intensity of the espresso.
Brew’d, a home-grown business in Dubai, has had a similar experience. The "Dirty Espresso" was initially launched as a one-day special, but customer demand led to it becoming a permanent menu item. The establishment later introduced versions such as the Cinnamon Roll Dirty and Cookie Monster Dirty.
Industry experts say TikTok and Instagram have played a significant role in spreading this trend. Videos showing espresso being gradually poured over cold milk have garnered millions of views, prompting many customers to visit cafes to try the drink after seeing these visuals.
UAE-based cafes are simultaneously adding local flavors to the mix. Between Two Palms has offered versions featuring "Tobacco V60" coffee and berries, and is currently developing drinks inspired by dates and saffron.
According to cafe owners, while social media may have sparked the popularity of the "dirty drink," the balance between espresso, cold milk, creamy texture, and the potential for diverse flavor creations could make it a lasting part of the UAE's cafe culture.
