16.5kg Pair of Gold Earrings Sets Two Guinness World Records in Dubai
A pair of giant handcrafted gold earrings in Dubai has set two Guinness World Records, further cementing the city’s status as the “City of Gold.”
Named “Mayura Sahasra,” meaning “A Thousand Peacocks,” the earrings are made of 22-karat gold and weigh a combined 16.514 kilograms.
Created by jewellery company Joyalukkas, the piece has secured the titles of the world’s heaviest pair of gold earrings and the world’s largest pair of gold earrings. Both records have been officially certified by Guinness World Records.
The record for the heaviest pair of gold earrings was set on October 12, 2026. The piece was unveiled on Saturday, October 24, at Joyalukkas’ Jewel of Joy showroom in Dubai’s Gold District, in the presence of Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, UAE Minister of Economy and Tourism, jewellery industry representatives and several officials.
Measuring 1.215 metres in length and 0.682 metres in diameter, the earrings took 55 skilled artisans 5,840 hours to complete over several months.
Dubai: Inspiring a New Record
John Paul Alukkas, CEO of jewellery company Joyalukkas, told Gulf News that the idea for the creation was inspired by the company’s four decades in the UAE and by witnessing Dubai’s growth and progress.
He said: “We have operated in the UAE for 40 years and have witnessed the growth of the country and the city of Dubai. Many records have been broken in Dubai over the years, and we decided to create something as a tribute to the city.”
He said the company aimed to create a landmark piece for the jewellery industry that would add to Dubai’s achievements.
“Dubai has always been known as the City of Gold, and this achievement will further strengthen that status,” he added.
The earrings were unveiled following the opening of Jewel of Joy, the largest jewellery showroom in the Middle East.
The CEO of Joyalukkas invited Dubai residents and tourists to view the creation.
“I want all our customers and visitors to Dubai to come and see what we have achieved. Creating this extraordinary pair of earrings took considerable time and effort, and they are now on display at the Jewel of Joy store,” he said.
Peacock-Inspired Design
The earrings take their name from the peacock, a bird regarded in Indian culture as a symbol of beauty, splendour and grace.
The piece is based on the traditional “jhumka”, a bell-shaped earring that holds a special place in South Asian jewellery-making and traditional bridal adornment.
The name “Mayura Sahasra” refers to a legend about a celestial peacock that scatters 1,000 feathers across the Earth, with each feather carrying a prayer, wish or dream. The earrings’ intricate details are also inspired by the bird’s plumage.
At the unveiling ceremony, an official Guinness World Records representative presented certificates for both world records to Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Dr Joy Alukkas, chairman of Joyalukkas Group, and John Paul Alukkas.
Other attendees included Laila Mohammed Suhail, a board member of the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group and chair of its marketing committee; Rashid Al Harmoodi, chief commercial officer at Dubai Gold District; and Loay Pozzolo, senior policy officer at the World Gold Council.
Dr Joy Alukkas described the piece as a tribute to Dubai and the artisans involved in its creation.
He said: “For nearly four decades, Joyalukkas has grown alongside Dubai, the City of Gold. These earrings are our tribute to the city and to the artisans whose hands transformed a seemingly impossible idea into a work of gold.”
He added: “Achieving two Guinness World Records titles with a single piece is a proud moment for our family, our teams across 13 countries and all the customers who have placed their trust in us over the decades.”
Changing Customer Preferences in the Jewellery Market
While these record-breaking earrings demonstrate the jewellery industry’s ability to create pieces on an exceptional scale, John Paul Alukkas said customer preferences and needs have changed significantly over the years.
He said: “I am the third generation of entrepreneurs in my family, and my grandfather started this business. Demand for jewellery at that time was very different from what it is today.”
He said the company has consistently sought to expand its product range in line with changing customer preferences, including by offering lighter jewellery and using gold of different purities.
He explained: “Today, we offer a wide range of lightweight jewellery. Our products include 22-karat and 18-karat gold jewellery, and we also plan to introduce 14-karat pieces.”
The Joyalukkas chief executive added that responding to customers’ evolving needs is a key part of the company’s operations.
He said: “At every stage of our development, we listen to what customers want, monitor changing market trends and adapt to current needs.”
