Dubai Unveils Self-Driving Pod Network to Ease Congestion

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) unveiled a new network of autonomous, electric "Urban Mobility Pods" designed to alleviate traffic by operating on dedicated, narrow lanes. The announcement was made on Tuesday during the World Governments Summit 2026.

The system will initially launch in four locations across the city, primarily connecting metro stations to surrounding areas to address the "last-mile connectivity" challenge.

Planned Routes:

While the exact launch and completion dates remain unspecified, the planned routes include:

1️⃣ Bluewaters Island (Pilot Route): A 2.8-kilometer route connecting the National Paints metro station to Bluewaters Island.

2️⃣ Umm Suqeim: A 1.9-kilometer route between the Mall of the Emirates metro station and Madinat Jumeirah.

3️⃣ Al Quoz: A 2.6-kilometer autonomous route from the Onpassive metro station to Alserkal Avenue and Times Square Center.

4️⃣ Dubai Festival City: The longest route, spanning 7 kilometers and covering the Dubai Festival City area, with potential future connection to the Dubai Metro Blue Line.

Urban Mobility Pod Features:

Capacity: Enclosed cabins accommodating 4-6 passengers.
 Range and Speed: A range of 250 kilometers per charge and a top speed of 50 kilometers per hour.
Efficiency: Capable of transporting over 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction.
 Amenities: Equipped with ticket scanners, SOS buttons, and large grab handles for passenger convenience.
