5 Useful Emirates ID Benefits You May Not Know About
The Emirates ID is mandatory for all UAE citizens and residents, but its uses extend beyond identity verification. Issued by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security, the card stores key information about its holder and can also be used for various everyday purposes.
Here are five important uses of the Emirates ID:
1. Withdrawing Cash from an ATM
Some UAE banks allow customers to withdraw cash from ATMs using their Emirates ID. However, the conditions and procedures vary by bank.
For example, Emirates NBD customers can use the bank’s mobile app to obtain a code, which can then be used with their Emirates ID to withdraw cash from an ATM.
Mashreq also allows customers to use their Emirates ID for services such as opening an account, paying bills, updating personal information, and depositing or withdrawing funds. Its ATMs display customers’ linked bank cards and offer cash withdrawals, domestic and international transfers, and requests for cheque books or bank statements.
An Emirates ID can also be used at some Al Hilal Bank ATMs to withdraw and transfer funds.
2. Paying for Fuel at ADNOC Stations
UAE residents can use their Emirates ID to pay for fuel at ADNOC stations. They must first activate the ADNOC Wallet app and link their Emirates ID to their account.
After topping up the wallet, customers can insert their Emirates ID into the payment terminal’s card slot while refuelling and follow the on-screen instructions to pay.
The service can also be used to pay for purchases at ADNOC Oasis stores and selected ADNOC car wash services.
3. Use as a Substitute for a Health Insurance Card
If you do not have your health insurance card when visiting a doctor, you can often present your Emirates ID instead. Healthcare facilities and providers can use the card’s information to verify and process your health insurance coverage.
4. Using the Smart Gates at Dubai Airport
The Smart Gates at Dubai International Airport are an automated border control system that uses facial recognition technology to identify passengers.
The system matches a passenger’s facial data with immigration records to determine whether they are a UAE citizen, a Gulf Cooperation Council citizen, a UAE resident or a traveller eligible for a visa on arrival.
To use an Emirates ID at a Smart Gate, the card must be registered in the ICP system. Passengers can then scan their card at the gate and look at the green light beside the camera. Glasses and hats must be removed before passing through.
5. Discounts at Hotels and Tourist Attractions
Another benefit of the Emirates ID is access to special discounts for UAE residents. Several hotels, leisure venues and tourist attractions across the country offer discounts to UAE residency holders.
At many of these venues, simply present your Emirates ID to receive any available resident discount.
