Nour Yahya, a Sudanese model based in the UAE, recalls the days she spent walking for hours under Dubai’s scorching sun, portfolio in hand, moving from one location to another to find a breakthrough in the modeling world. It was a challenging journey that eventually led her to one of the global fashion industry’s most prestigious events.

"What I remember most is walking for hours under the hot sun, moving from place to place to find an opportunity to start my professional modeling career," she said. "I came to the UAE with this dream, not to find an ordinary job."

Every day, Nour walked the streets of Dubai with her portfolio and a dream that many dismissed as unrealistic.

Job interviews, endless auditions, and hours spent under the blistering sun became part of her daily routine. Nour shared the highs and lows of her journey with her social media followers, refusing to let rejections dampen her spirits, even when the opportunities she hoped for seemed out of reach.

A few months later, the very streets that once represented doubt and uncertainty became the launchpad for a remarkable success story.

In March this year, Nour became the first UAE-based Sudanese model to walk for Chanel at Paris Fashion Week, a milestone that transformed years of perseverance into a career-defining achievement.

Reflecting on the experience, she said: "This was one of the most unforgettable moments of my life."

Yet, long before Chanel called, Nour was simply a university graduate trying to convince herself that pursuing her passion was the right decision.

Who is Nour Yahya?

Nour Yahya was born and raised in Sudan. She studied economics at the University of Khartoum, one of the country's most prestigious universities, specializing in statistics and political science.

After graduation, Yahya secured a job that many considered a stable and secure career, yet she felt she was not in the right place.

"I never felt like I truly belonged there," she said.

Although the position provided financial security and valuable experience, her passion for creativity continued to pull her toward a different path.

A simple, casual photoshoot with friends unexpectedly became a turning point in her life.

"It was at that moment I believed this industry aligned with my true personality," Yahya said.

Shortly after, she resigned from her job without knowing what awaited her.

"The only thing I knew was that I wanted to find a path where I felt passion and purpose," she said.

Pursuing the dream of modeling in Dubai

Unlike many who migrate to the UAE in search of conventional employment, Noor arrived in the country with a clear and specific objective.

"I came to the UAE with a dream of modeling, not to find a standard job," she said.

However, reality proved to be quite different from her expectations.

Friends and family suggested she secure a stable job while pursuing her modeling career. Noor accepted the advice, believing a steady income would fund her aspirations rather than replace them.

"I respected their opinion and thought to myself, why not try both paths?" she said.

For months, Noor attended job interviews, walking across various parts of Dubai to get from one appointment to another. Throughout this journey, she shared both her successes and challenges with her thousands of followers.

Despite her efforts, she did not receive any job offers.

At the time, every rejection felt like a closed door, but today she looks back on those experiences with a different perspective.

"What kept me going was my genuine passion for building this professional career and my belief in the value of the path I had chosen," Noor said.

Learning to Embrace Rejection

For Noor, the most difficult lesson was not perfecting her runway walk, but learning how to cope with rejection.

My biggest challenge was learning how to handle rejection, she said.

In the fashion industry, rejection is a constant. A model might succeed in one casting call, only to be turned down in dozens of others.

Over time, I realized that rejection does not mean I am not good enough, Noor said. Sometimes it simply means that someone else was a better fit for that specific project. This shift in perspective changed everything for her.

Instead of allowing negative responses to undermine her confidence, Noor used them as fuel for growth. She embraced constructive criticism but refused to let comments intended solely to discourage her affect her mindset.

There was always a dialogue running through my mind, she said, but in the end, my determination was stronger than my fears.

The call that changed her life

After months of attending castings, Nour finally secured an opportunity that many models dream of.

The selection process for Chanel involved several runway evaluations, followed by an invitation for a fitting. However, reaching this stage did not guarantee a spot in the final show.

Models often reach the fitting stage only to be cut from the final lineup before the show begins.

After returning for final alterations, Nour eventually received the definitive call.

"I was sitting in a cafe drinking coffee when I got the call," she said.

"My reaction was completely instinctive," Nour added. "I screamed with excitement and couldn't stop smiling. From the moment I received that call until I stepped onto the runway, the smile never left my face."

Appearing in the Chanel show was more than just another contract for Nour; it was a validation that all the difficult decisions, rejections, and days of uncertainty were worth it.

"This success means so much to me because it is not just a victory in the fashion industry," she said. "It reminds me that every decision I made and every experience I went through played a part in shaping my journey."

Moving Beyond Generational Beliefs

Noor now graces the runways of some of the world’s most prestigious fashion events, but she believes the most significant transformation in her life occurred long before she ever set foot in Paris.

She grew up in an environment where lighter skin was equated with beauty, a societal pressure that led her to use skin-lightening products for a period of time.

This continued until one day she asked herself: "Do I truly have an issue with my skin tone?"

Her answer was no.

"So why was I trying to change it?" Noor said. "Was I doing this for myself, or to meet the expectations of others?"

Following that realization, she stopped using skin-lightening products and never looked back.

"Today, I am proud of how I look," Noor said. "I believe beauty is not defined by a specific skin tone, and the most important step anyone can take is to first learn to accept themselves."

For Noor, walking the Chanel runway was more than just a milestone in the fashion world; it was the culmination of a journey that began with hours of walking the streets of Dubai, fueled by nothing but hope, perseverance, and the belief that her dreams were worth pursuing.
