Abu Dhabi includes oral medication Fondayu in government obesity treatment program
The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre, has introduced a daily oral treatment option for obesity as part of its "Personalized Weight Management Program."
The program integrates medical treatment, behavioral support, and continuous digital monitoring, aiming to improve health outcomes and enhance quality of life.
The new treatment addresses one of the primary challenges in obesity management—long-term adherence—by offering a more flexible and convenient alternative to traditional therapies, thereby supporting continuity of care.
Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, stated that this initiative reflects Abu Dhabi’s commitment to advancing integrated, patient-centered care that addresses real-world challenges, particularly treatment adherence.
She added that expanding access to innovative solutions contributes to improved health outcomes and a sustainable quality of life.
The UAE is the second country in the world, after the United States, to approve this treatment for adults with obesity or those who are overweight with related comorbidities, a move that strengthens Abu Dhabi’s position in healthcare innovation.
As part of the rollout, the Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC) will provide the treatment to eligible patients through a comprehensive program that combines digital monitoring, personalized clinical support, and an integrated coverage model.
The treatment, known as Foundayo or orforglipron, is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist that helps regulate appetite and food intake, supporting effective weight management.
Rashid Al Suwaidi, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre, said the program focuses on addressing behavioral challenges and empowering individuals to adopt healthy, sustainable habits through practical and flexible solutions.
The treatment will be covered for eligible adults under the program, an initiative that increases access to care and supports integrated obesity management models across the emirate.
