The Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) has approved Wegovy (semaglutide), a once-daily oral treatment for long-term weight management in adults with obesity or overweight conditions associated with weight-related diseases.

Developed by Novo Nordisk, the drug is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Used alongside a low-calorie diet and increased physical activity, it aids in sustainable weight loss and maintenance, potentially improving health outcomes for eligible patients.

Clinical data also indicates that the medication can reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in high-risk patients, including cardiovascular death, heart attack, and stroke.

With this approval, the UAE becomes the second country in the world to authorize this treatment, highlighting the nation's leading position in adopting advanced medical innovations and providing early access for patients.

Dr. Fatima Al Kaabi, Director General of the Emirates Drug Establishment, stated that the approval reflects the entity's commitment to strengthening the pharmaceutical ecosystem and addressing obesity as a primary driver of chronic diseases. She added that this move supports the evaluation of innovative treatments in accordance with international scientific standards.

She further noted that the decision underscores the UAE's focus on adopting the latest medical advancements and establishing a flexible regulatory system that ensures access to high-quality treatments and improves healthcare outcomes.

The approval is based on clinical studies demonstrating the treatment's efficacy in weight loss and long-term maintenance alongside lifestyle changes, as well as its cardiovascular benefits for at-risk groups.

Venkat Kalyan, General Manager of Novo Nordisk Gulf, said the collaboration with the Emirates Drug Establishment reflects a shared commitment to providing innovative treatment options.

He added that semaglutide has an established safety profile and is widely trusted within the medical community. According to him, the once-daily oral form of the drug offers greater convenience for patients and can improve treatment adherence.
