Is Dubai’s Ibn Battuta Mall in Decline? 38 New Retail and Entertainment Outlets on the Way
Following the circulation of videos and rumours on social media about declining footfall and the possible closure of Ibn Battuta Mall in Dubai, the mall’s management has announced the opening and launch of 38 new retail, dining and entertainment businesses.
In recent weeks, images showing quiet areas of Ibn Battuta Mall, one of Dubai’s best-known shopping centres, have sparked online debate about its future. Citing an apparent decline in visitor numbers, some social media users have questioned whether the mall is losing its appeal.
However, newly released figures from the mall’s management show that 21 new businesses have already opened, while another 17 are due to launch by the end of 2027.
Dubai Retail said the openings form part of a comprehensive redevelopment and expansion programme aimed at enhancing the mall’s shopping, dining and entertainment offerings.
Ibn Battuta Mall records 1.5 million visits a month
According to Dubai Retail, Ibn Battuta Mall, which opened in 2005, records an average of about 1.5 million visits each month and is currently home to more than 350 businesses.
Named after the renowned 14th-century traveller Ibn Battuta, the mall features six themed sections with architecture inspired by his journeys to different parts of the world.
Although videos shared on social media show quiet areas of the mall, the footage reflects conditions only at the times when those individuals visited and does not necessarily represent its overall performance.
Dubai Retail has not responded to questions about the claims circulating on social media, but its latest figures provide further insight into the mall’s current position.
New restaurants and cafés open
Several food and beverage brands have begun operating at the mall, including Five Guys, Jimmy John’s Sandwiches, Marugame Udon, Caribou Coffee, Halla Shawarma, Zaika and Butter & Bread.
Peet’s Coffee, Ocean Basket, Asia Kitchen and Smoothie Factory are also among the brands due to open at the mall soon.
New cinema and expanded family entertainment offerings
One of Ibn Battuta Mall’s most significant expansion plans is the opening of Roxy Cinemas, which will provide new facilities for filmgoers.
The Hopa Loompa Entertainment family entertainment venue is also set to open.
Zamania by Leo & Loona and Like Bricks have also joined the mall’s entertainment offerings in recent months, while Toy Station is preparing to open.
New fashion and retail brands arrive
In the retail segment, Jack & Jones, Anta, Tanishq, Magrabi, Mumuso and Suit Sartoria have recently opened.
OWNDAYS and Puzzle Supplements are also included in the list of upcoming openings.
Chemist Warehouse, Midi, My Shops and Cantata are among the other brands due to join Ibn Battuta Mall.
Banking, healthcare and education services expand
The mall’s expansion programme is not limited to shops and restaurants, but also includes banking, healthcare, education and professional services.
According to the mall’s management, ADCB, Amit Care, Doctor M, Melodica and Desco Copy & Print Centre are among the businesses that have recently opened or are preparing to launch.
Impact of surrounding residential development
Dubai Retail said the development of residential projects around Ibn Battuta Mall over the past decade has expanded and diversified its customer base.
The company said the 38 newly opened and upcoming businesses will not only strengthen the mall’s appeal as a shopping and leisure destination, but also improve access to everyday services for residents of nearby communities.
Despite recent speculation on social media, the announced expansion plans indicate that Ibn Battuta Mall’s management is investing in broader operations and a more diverse range of services. No plans to close the mall have been announced.
