Great stories often begin quietly, with a simple event. For Colonel Ali Khamis Al Jafleh, it was a phone call on a calm morning in 1993; a call from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai, that would forever change not only his life's path but also the future of sports in the Emirates.

Al Jafleh was summoned for a "big" mission: to elevate Dubai's position in global horse racing and create an event that would dazzle the world. A mission that, in just three years, transformed the idea of the Dubai World Cup – the world's richest horse race – into reality.

🟢 A Moment Etched in History

"The first feeling I had was absolute surprise," Al Jafleh recalls. "When His Highness entrusted me with the task of developing this sport to the highest international standards, I knew it was no ordinary mission. I felt an immense responsibility to turn an extraordinary dream into reality."

As a seasoned pilot and then-commander of the Air Force, he was well acquainted with the concept of heavy responsibilities. Back in 1992, Al Jafleh, as the first chairman of the Dubai Racing Club, had overseen the first official race on the simple dirt track of Nad Al Sheba; a track that, at the time, few imagined would one day host the world's greatest sporting event.

🟢 Overcoming Challenges with the Power of Belief

Transforming a pristine desert into a venue meeting global standards was no easy task. When asked what motivated him during those difficult days, Al Jafleh answers decisively: "Sheikh Mohammed's belief and confidence. He told me he had a precise plan and that my job was simply to execute it. When your leader has such complete faith, you have no doubts."

The first major challenge was obtaining approval from the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA). The UAE had to prove that it adhered to all global regulations and was a country free of equine diseases. To achieve this goal, Al Jafleh made numerous trips to England, Ireland, France, and the United States to learn and implement the highest standards of sports management.

The success of this massive project required a dream team, handpicked by Sheikh Mohammed himself. At the head of this team was Dr. Michael Osborne, a man of international renown who had previously established Sheikh Mohammed's Irish horse breeding network. Al Jafleh remembers him as "a man with a big heart and unparalleled passion."

Alongside him were prominent figures such as Bruce Scott, a respected British journalist and equestrian, and other key figures. Al Jafleh says of them: "We were not just a team, but a family united to realize His Highness's vision. There was an unparalleled level of trust and mutual respect between us."

The result of this harmony was the International Jockeys' Challenge in 1993, an event that drew the world's best riders to Dubai and proved that the Emirates belonged at the highest level of the sport.

🟢 Thirty Years Later: A Promise Fulfilled

Today, the Dubai World Cup is a magnificent and dazzling event watched across continents.

When we ask Al Jafleh how he feels now, 30 years later, standing on the modern Meydan Racecourse, he says in a deep and personal tone: "I always go back to that first moment; to the trust that was placed in me and the responsibility I carried. Is this journey over? No, horse racing is evolving like life. But when I see the world coming to Dubai every year and seeing this level of quality and professionalism, my heart testifies that the promise of 1993 has been fulfilled."
