Dubai Electricity and Water Authority sets world record as annual electricity outages in Dubai drop to 49 seconds per year
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has announced that the Customer Minutes Lost (CML) index in the emirate has decreased to 0.82 minutes, or approximately 49 seconds per year. This figure represents the lowest global level for power grid reliability.
This achievement marks a 13% improvement over DEWA’s previous record of 0.94 minutes in 2024, further strengthening Dubai’s position as a global leader in the continuity of electricity services.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA, stated that this success aligns with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to establish the world’s best electricity and water infrastructure. He noted that the extensive adoption of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, and the development of the smart grid have been instrumental in enhancing service efficiency and sustainability.
DEWA’s Smart Grid program involves an investment of AED 7 billion through 2035. It aims to modernize the power transmission and distribution network, minimize outages, reduce energy losses, and optimize load management.
A key component of this program is the Smart Grid Restoration System, the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa. The system identifies, isolates, and resolves faults automatically without human intervention.
Dubai’s Customer Minutes Lost index has dropped from 6.88 minutes in 2012 to 0.82 minutes in 2025. According to DEWA, this performance is approximately 18 times better than the average recorded by leading utility companies in the European Union.
