More than 60 UAE residents headed to the Shawka Pools mountain trail in Ras Al Khaimah before dawn; however, this time it was not for hiking or recreation, but to clear litter from the 10-kilometer path ahead of the summer season.

Carrying trash bags instead of camping gear, the volunteers trekked for nearly five hours, collecting approximately 30 kilograms of scattered waste to ensure future visitors encounter a cleaner natural environment.

Organized by Greenway Adventure, the initiative brought together hikers, adventurers, children, and seniors from Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, and Ras Al Khaimah. Participants ranged in age from 7 to 60, with each individual carrying one or two trash bags while navigating the trail.

Nasir Hussain, program lead and certified hiker at Greenway Adventure, stated that the group began the cleanup at approximately 3:30 AM from two separate points to ensure various sections of the Shawka Pools trail were covered.

He explained that most of the litter had accumulated during the winter season, when the area is popular for hiking, swimming, and camping. According to him, while most hikers typically do not litter, some campers occasionally leave their waste behind.

Hussain noted that the program is part of a long-term effort by the hiking community to protect the UAE’s environment. He added that the group has been organizing cleanup events for nearly 10 years, continuing these activities under the Greenway Adventure name for the past six years.

Following coordination between the organizers and local authorities, the collected waste was handed over to Ras Al Khaimah Municipality teams for disposal.

Hussain expressed hope that the initiative would encourage visitors to enjoy nature more responsibly and refrain from leaving litter in mountainous areas.

"This is our home," he said. "A home is beautiful when it is clean and cared for."

He also urged the public to protect mountain trails and natural areas for future generations, adding that the small actions of every individual can make a significant difference.
