New "silent" radar cameras have been deployed across Dubai to detect various traffic violations.

Introduced by Dubai Police, these traffic cameras are less conspicuous than traditional speed traps found on major highways and monitor more than just speeding.

The grey and black striped poles are increasingly visible in residential areas, aimed at encouraging motorists to adhere to safe driving practices.

The technology is dubbed "silent" because it does not emit a flash when capturing an offense. In addition to monitoring speed, these radars identify drivers using mobile phones or failing to wear seat belts.

Currently, using a handheld mobile phone while driving carries a fine of AED 800 and four black points on the driver's license.

Exceeding the speed limit by up to 30 km/h results in a AED 300 fine. Speeding by up to 60 km/h can lead to a AED 1,500 fine, six black points, and a 15-day vehicle impoundment.

Drivers caught not wearing a seat belt face a AED 400 fine and four black points.

What violations do Dubai’s smart cameras detect?

Dubai’s smart cameras and radars are designed to identify a broad spectrum of traffic offenses beyond just speeding.

These systems detect driving above or below the speed limit, expired vehicle registrations, mobile phone use, failure to wear seat belts, jumping red lights, sudden swerving, and excessive vehicle noise.

The cameras also enhance safety for pedestrians and students by identifying drivers who fail to stop at pedestrian crossings or ignore school bus stop signs.

Specialized radars also ensure heavy vehicles remain in their designated lanes. Depending on the violation, penalties range from several hundred to several thousand dirhams, along with black points and vehicle impoundment.
