Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) has expanded the use of AI-powered smart cameras across its public transport fleet to enhance passenger safety, monitor driver behaviour and rapidly detect accidents and road hazards.

Sharjah’s intercity buses have been equipped with 10 smart cameras inside and outside each vehicle. The cameras monitor the road, passenger movement and driver behaviour. Each Sharjah taxi also has five smart cameras covering the vehicle’s interior and the road ahead and behind.

The AI-powered system can detect objects and pedestrians, identify vehicles overtaking from the side, analyse driver behaviour and record passenger numbers. It also issues real-time alerts in the event of an accident or unusual activity, enabling a faster response.

In taxis, the cameras are also used to detect violations such as failure to wear a seat belt, mobile phone use by drivers and smoking inside the vehicle. Footage of the passenger area can also help trace lost property and protect customers’ rights.

Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, Chairman of SRTA, said Sharjah would continue investing in advanced technologies to create a safer and more sustainable transport network. Abdulaziz Mohammed Al Jarwan, Director of Transport Affairs at the authority, described the system as an important step towards strengthening operational oversight and reducing response times to accidents and other incidents.

The initiative comes as Sharjah’s public transport network carried about 25.7 million passengers in the first half of 2026. Of these, more than 19.3 million travelled by taxi, while around 6.37 million used city and intercity buses.
