Dubai Ruler: I See My Father’s Kindness in the Crown Prince’s Character
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has paid an emotional tribute to his father, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, ahead of the 36th anniversary of his death, describing him as his “first teacher, first leader and first inspiration”. Sheikh Rashid died on October 7, 1990.
In the letter, Sheikh Mohammed said many of the principles guiding Dubai’s administration today are rooted in his father’s teachings, including meticulous planning, foresight, avoiding waste, making optimal use of resources and responding directly to people’s needs.
He also said his father regarded “credibility and trust” as Dubai’s true capital and believed that the confidence of partners, companies, banks, institutions and governments must never be compromised.
The Ruler of Dubai wrote that Sheikh Rashid’s presence and legacy remain visible in the emirate’s streets, projects, ports and markets, as well as in its community spirit and the aspirations of new generations. Every new achievement in Dubai, he said, carries a part of the vision of the founder of modern Dubai.
Another section of the letter focused on Sheikh Rashid’s grandsons. Sheikh Mohammed said he sees his father’s closeness to the people, humility and kindness in Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai. He also highlighted Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed’s reserved manner, deep thinking and focus on results.
In a symbolic passage, he wrote: “Your compass is still with us,” referring to the values and principles that, he said, continue to guide Dubai’s development and governance.
Sheikh Hamdan also commemorated his grandfather, describing him as the founder of modern Dubai, a father to its people and the architect of the emirate’s development. He also highlighted Sheikh Rashid’s role alongside Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in the formation of the UAE.
