Social Media Appeal Draws Hundreds to Young Mother’s Funeral in Dubai
Hundreds of UAE residents who had never met Marwa attended the young mother’s funeral and funeral prayer in Dubai, following a widely shared appeal on social media.
Marwa Ahmed Al Amin Bakhit, a Sudanese woman living in the UAE, died while giving birth to her twins, leaving behind her husband and two newborns. Her funeral prayer was held on Friday, September 25, after the afternoon prayer at Al Qusais Cemetery Mosque in Dubai.
The case drew attention after the Janaza UAE Instagram account published the time and location of the funeral that morning, urging the public to attend and support Marwa’s family. The message called on residents to be her “family and brothers” at that difficult time.
A few hours later, large crowds arrived in Al Qusais from across the emirates. According to one of Marwa’s friends, the prayer hall became so crowded that some mourners prayed outside the building. Heavy traffic also built up on roads leading to the cemetery, and people continued arriving to pay their respects for up to an hour after the funeral prayer ended.
Marwa’s family later said she had two sisters in the UAE, but had lost her parents several years earlier and had no close male relatives in the country. Her newborns are now being cared for by one of her sisters.
Abdullah Hussein Al Marzouqi, who manages the Janaza UAE Instagram account, said the volunteer-run page publishes funeral and funeral prayer announcements across the UAE. It verifies information about deaths and funeral arrangements before publication to prevent the spread of false reports.
