Reuters, citing maritime intelligence firm Marisks, reported that three Liberian-flagged oil tankers were struck by unidentified projectiles on Tuesday while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The origin and type of the projectiles remain unclear.

According to Marisks, the three vessels had switched off their Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) while passing through the strait to prevent their positions from being tracked.

One of the vessels targeted was the oil products tanker Al Ruwais, which Kpler data showed had conducted a ship-to-ship transfer near Sohar, Oman, in late September and discharged its diesel cargo.

The very large crude carrier Mersin Prosperity also transferred about two million barrels of Iraqi Basrah crude to another vessel in a ship-to-ship operation near Sohar in mid-September.

Both Al Ruwais and Mersin Prosperity are managed by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). The company declined to comment on the incident.

The third vessel, the tanker Sinbad, loaded petroleum products at Saudi Arabia’s Jubail Industrial Port in early September. The company managing the tanker has not yet responded to media requests for comment.
