UAE health authorities have launched a nationwide campaign to highlight the vital role women play in maintaining the country’s blood supplies and encourage more of them to take part in this life-saving effort.

Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA) introduced the year-long initiative to raise awareness of the importance of voluntary blood donation and its role in strengthening healthcare services.

According to figures released by SEHA, 8,599 Emirati women have registered as blood donors since 2020, making a total of 4,022 blood donations. Their contributions have helped maintain the supplies needed for blood transfusions and emergency medical care.

The Importance of Women’s Role in Maintaining UAE Blood Supplies

Health officials said a diverse donor base can help prevent blood shortages, particularly during emergencies and periods when donations decline seasonally.

The need for blood and blood products is not limited to any particular group. A wide range of patients may require transfusions, including women who experience medical complications during childbirth.

SEHA’s new campaign, launched under the PureHealth group, will feature women-focused awareness initiatives, educational activities, community partnerships and blood donor recognition programmes throughout the year.

The initiative aims to raise awareness of voluntary blood donation and encourage women to contribute regularly.

Expanding the Culture of Voluntary Blood Donation

Dr Eiman Al Zaabi, medical director of SEHA Blood Bank Services, said women’s involvement in voluntary blood donation has become increasingly important in recent years.

“This campaign gives us an opportunity to recognise women’s contributions while encouraging more eligible women to donate blood,” she said.

“Through year-round education, awareness and recognition programmes, we aim to promote regular blood donation and foster a culture of social responsibility,” Dr Al Zaabi added.

The initiative also forms part of SEHA’s commitment to maintaining a safe and sustainable blood supply, while emphasising the important role individuals and local communities play in meeting patients’ blood needs.

What Are the Blood Donation Requirements in the UAE?

Under the stated requirements, prospective blood donors must meet the following criteria:

  • Be between 18 and 65 years old
  • Weigh at least 50 kilograms
  • Be in good general health
  • Hold an Emirates ID

Tourists and visitors are also generally not permitted to donate blood in the UAE.

Health authorities hope the year-long campaign will increase women’s participation, strengthen the country’s blood supplies and help sustainably meet the needs of healthcare facilities and patients.
