Dubai’s 10.3km stormwater drainage tunnel, 60 metres underground
Dubai Municipality has outlined details of a 10.3-kilometre deep drainage tunnel project aimed at expanding the emirate’s stormwater network, improving rainwater discharge efficiency and strengthening the city’s resilience to changing weather conditions.
The tunnel has an internal diameter of 10 metres and runs between 40 and 60 metres below ground, making it one of Dubai’s major infrastructure projects for stormwater management.
According to Dubai Municipality, the project plays a key role in improving drainage network performance, enhancing the city’s preparedness for the effects of climate change and meeting the demands of rapid urban development.
Dubai’s deep drainage tunnel serves an area of up to 500 square kilometres, increasing the efficiency of rainwater collection and discharge across key parts of the emirate.
The project is also equipped with an advanced pumping system comprising four main pumps with a combined capacity of 36 cubic metres of water per second.
Jebel Ali, the Expo 2020 site, the Dubai South residential district and Al Maktoum International Airport City are among the areas benefiting from the project.
Dubai Municipality said the project forms part of its comprehensive approach to developing sustainable infrastructure that meets the city’s current needs while enhancing its capacity to address future demand.
The project also supports Dubai’s efforts to strengthen its position as a global city with efficient and sustainable infrastructure.
