Chinese automaker BYD is preparing to enter a new phase of competition with the world’s most prestigious luxury car brands. Its ultra-luxury marque, Yangwang, is set to stage the global premiere of its flagship limousine in the UAE next month.

The Chinese automotive giant will unveil the Yangwang Altior in early November at Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental, Abu Dhabi.

The launch marks a significant step in BYD’s plans. Having built its international reputation on electric vehicles and battery technology, the company now aims to challenge leading names such as Rolls-Royce and Mercedes-Maybach in the ultra-luxury, chauffeur-driven car market.

The Altior, previously known internally as Project HU, is Yangwang’s first flagship ultra-luxury executive sedan.

The vehicle’s official name was announced in late October, with the brand positioning the Altior at the top of its expanding luxury line-up.

The vehicle is expected to measure about 5.5 metres in length, placing it among the world’s largest luxury sedans.

Images released ahead of the unveiling show a large, imposing grille, a long wheelbase and rear-hinged back doors — a design feature commonly found on chauffeur-driven luxury vehicles.

A roof-mounted LiDAR sensor is also visible, indicating that advanced driver-assistance technologies are likely to play a major role in the model’s features.

Technical specifications remain under wraps

However, BYD has yet to disclose Altior’s full technical specifications, powertrain type, performance figures or UAE pricing.

Reports from China suggest the model could cost more than 2 million yuan, approximately $300,000, in its domestic market, although the figure has not been officially confirmed.

The technology used in the vehicle could prove as significant as its exterior design.

Yangwang has previously introduced advanced electric vehicle technologies, including the e⁴ four-motor architecture and the DiSus Intelligent Body Control System.

Some reports have also linked the brand’s new flagship to BYD’s next-generation battery plans, but claims that the model will use solid-state batteries remain unconfirmed.

Altior’s unveiling comes as Chinese carmakers gradually move beyond their traditional focus on affordable and mid-range electric vehicles, competing instead for customers willing to pay premium prices for advanced engineering, technology and luxury features.

Yangwang’s Position in BYD’s Brand Portfolio

Yangwang sits at the top of BYD’s brand portfolio. The company also owns other brands, including Denza.

Yangwang’s current line-up includes the U7 sports sedan, the U8 luxury off-road SUV and the U9 electric supercar.

The brand is also present in the UAE market, where the U8 Arabian Edition is offered through Al-Futtaim Electric Mobility for AED659,900.

Choosing the UAE for the global unveiling of Yangwang’s new flagship places the vehicle in a market with significant demand for high-end cars, ranging from chauffeur-driven limousines to bespoke supercars.

BYD’s main challenge will be convincing buyers loyal to the heritage, prestige and build quality of European luxury marques that Chinese engineering can also compete at the highest end of the luxury car market.

The November unveiling in Abu Dhabi will provide the first opportunity to assess whether the Altior can emerge as a serious rival to the market’s established brands in terms of design, technology and luxury positioning.
