Six Arrested in Dubai Over Dh2.6 Million Cryptocurrency Fraud
Dubai Police have arrested six suspects in connection with a Dh2.6 million cryptocurrency fraud case. Officers used blockchain transaction-tracking technology to identify the suspects and seize the stolen digital assets before they could be transferred to other wallets.
The case involved Dh2 million in cash and Dh600,000 in cryptocurrency. The suspects defrauded the victim by exploiting the operations of an unlicensed exchange and the complexity of cryptocurrency transactions.
The case began when the victim approached an unlicensed exchange with a substantial amount of cash to purchase cryptocurrency. There, the victim met several members of the group and agreed to complete a transaction with them.
Police investigations found that the suspects persuaded the victim to transfer digital assets to decentralised wallets, whose owners are more difficult to identify. Once the transfer was completed, the suspects took the cash and fled.
The group believed they could conceal the movement of the assets and evade detection and arrest by rapidly transferring the cryptocurrency between multiple wallets and hiding the owners’ identities.
Blockchain Transactions Traced, Suspects Arrested
Following a complaint from the victim, specialist teams from Dubai Police’s General Department of Criminal Investigation launched simultaneous investigations along two tracks.
First, officers conducted field investigations and gathered evidence to identify the suspects and locate their hideout. At the same time, technical experts used advanced blockchain analysis tools to track the movement of digital assets across multiple wallets.
Despite the complexity of the case and the speed at which the cryptocurrencies were transferred, Dubai Police said all six suspects were identified and arrested within a short period.
Experts also traced and seized the stolen digital assets before they could be transferred to other wallets, converted or withdrawn.
Dubai Police Warn Against Dealing with Unlicensed Cryptocurrency Exchanges
Dubai Police have warned residents following this case to avoid buying or selling cryptocurrencies through unknown intermediaries or unlicensed exchanges.
The force stressed that verifying the legal status of companies offering cryptocurrency services before conducting any transaction is one of the most important ways to prevent fraud and financial losses.
Police also warned against investment offers promising unusually high returns within a short period and urged citizens and residents to conduct cryptocurrency transactions, particularly high-value cash deals, only through reputable and licensed entities.
Dubai Police also emphasised the importance of promptly reporting suspicious activity, saying timely reports can help identify offenders and prevent stolen assets from being transferred or withdrawn.
