Emirates flight from Dubai to London diverted to Frankfurt over medical emergency
An Emirates Airbus A380 operating flight EK31 from Dubai to London Heathrow on Thursday, October 1, diverted to Frankfurt, Germany, after a passenger suffered a medical emergency. The aircraft landed safely in Frankfurt, where the passenger disembarked to receive further medical care.
Emirates confirmed the diversion in a statement also shared by the Dubai Government Media Office. The airline said cabin crew attended to the passenger during the flight, while the necessary medical assistance was arranged in Frankfurt before the aircraft landed.
The airline initially said the flight was expected to resume its journey to Heathrow at around 18:00 Frankfurt time, or 20:00 UAE time. Emirates apologised to passengers for the delay and said the health and safety of passengers and crew remained its highest priority. No details have yet been released about the passenger’s condition.
Flight-tracking website Flightradar24 reported that the aircraft transmitted emergency code 7700 and descended as it approached Frankfurt. Pilots use the code to notify air traffic control of a general emergency.
According to aviation website AIRLIVE, the aircraft activated code 7700 around six hours after departing Dubai while flying over Europe at an altitude of about 40,000 feet. It left Frankfurt for London at 18:10 local time and landed at Heathrow at 18:38 London time.
On July 29, Emirates flight EK225 from Dubai to San Francisco was also diverted to Heathrow because of a passenger’s medical emergency. Passengers were unable to reach their destination that day, and Emirates provided hotel accommodation in London and rebooked them on the earliest available flights on July 30.
