Why UAE residents continue to drink Karak tea in 45-degree heat
Despite UAE summer temperatures soaring above 45 degrees Celsius, hot Karak tea remains one of the most popular beverages among residents. Experts attribute this enduring habit to a combination of culture, lifestyle, physiological responses, and psychological comfort.
For many residents, Karak is more than just a drink; it is an integral part of daily routines, family gatherings, workplace conversations, and rest periods. Furthermore, as most people spend the majority of their day in air-conditioned homes, vehicles, offices, or shopping malls, the transition between the outdoor heat and cold indoor environments often increases the craving for a warm beverage.
From a physiological perspective, hot drinks can stimulate sweating, which helps cool the body through evaporation. However, medical professionals emphasize that this effect is more prominent in dry climates. In the humid conditions of the UAE, where evaporation rates are lower, it should not be relied upon as a primary cooling method. Regular water intake remains the most critical factor in preventing dehydration and heatstroke.
Specialists also warn that consuming beverages at extremely high temperatures can damage esophageal tissue. Additionally, Karak typically contains sugar and caffeine, and excessive consumption may impact sleep patterns, anxiety levels, energy fluctuations, and overall hydration.
Psychologists suggest that through habit, the brain associates drinking Karak with a sense of security, tranquility, and a brief pause in the day. Consequently, while cold drinks may offer more immediate refreshment, they do not always provide the same level of psychological comfort.
Experts believe there is no need to give up Karak during the summer, provided it is consumed in moderation. This should be balanced with adequate water intake, hydrating fruits and vegetables, and light meals as part of a daily routine.
