The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, July 14, strongly condemned a missile attack on two of its oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. The attack resulted in the death of an Indian national and left eight others injured.

According to a statement from the Ministry, the tankers "Mombasa" and "Al Bahia" were struck by two cruise missiles while transiting the southern route of the Strait of Hormuz within Omani territorial waters. UAE officials have held Iran responsible for the attack.

One Indian crew member was killed in the strike, while eight others were injured, four of whom are reported to be in critical condition. Six of the injured are Indian nationals, and two are Ukrainian citizens. The UAE expressed its condolences to the family of the victim and to the government and people of India, wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

The Ministry described the attack as a flagrant violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2817, which underscores the freedom of navigation and prohibits attacks on commercial vessels or the disruption of international maritime routes.

The statement further noted that targeting commercial shipping and using the Strait of Hormuz as a tool for pressure or economic extortion constitutes an act of piracy. It added that such actions pose a direct threat to regional stability, the safety of its inhabitants, and global energy security.

The UAE called on Iran to cease these attacks, commit to a total halt of hostile actions, and ensure the full and unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
